About
Water Vessels draws on the artists’ fascination with drawing, line, and colour, while responding to the Heritage Valley Firehall’s function and design. Inspired by the inter-meshing of fire prevention history with humankind’s tradition of collecting, storing, and transporting water, the artists created illustrations that evoke the vessels portrayed in classical still life paintings. Containers for liquids – bowls, bottles, vases, and buckets – are widely apparent in the material production of many different cultures. The use of water as a powerful agent in the control of fires is an ancient one. While today many other materials are used to combat fires, vessels figure into the development of technologies for harnessing water’s incredible abilities.
