The Dancer is a human-scale abstracted representation of a figure in motion. The sculpture is based on an ink brush drawing. The artists intend that the sculpture imparts a feeling of thought, presence, and inspiration to the viewer. Totino Busby believes that public art should challenge the viewer, spark curiosity, and heighten the human spirit.

Bella Totino-Busby & Verne Busby

Verne Busby and Bella Totino-Busby have lived and worked most of their lives in the Edmonton area. Verne received his BA in 1972 and Secondary Education Teaching Certificate (1974) from the University of Manitoba. Returning to Edmonton he furthered his design experience with a two year Design Arts diploma from Grant McEwan College Design Arts (1977) and continued design studies at the University of Alberta. Bella also completed the Design Arts program at GMCC in 1977. Both worked in the commercial art field for various advertising agencies and design firms.

In 1986, they formed Totino Busby Design Inc., an independent design and illustration studio.

Verne has taught part time at the University of Alberta – Faculty of Art and Design – Visual Communications and moderates life drawing sessions bi-monthly at the Edmonton Wecan Society Artists co-operative Harcourt House. He also teaches workshops.

Verne has been resident artist at the University of Saskatchewan – Kenderdine Campus, Emma Lake in 2010, and the Ted Harrision Artist Retreat – Carcross, Yukon in 2011.

Verne has participated in self directed monthly residencies in 2012 on Bere Island Ireland and 2014 near the Tyne Valley, PEI. Plein air painting has been the focal point of all residencies.

Bella studied for several years at the Red Deer College Summer Series program. Over the years she has created works of art using a variety of media including cast concrete, silk screened fabric, cast plaster and glass mosaic as well as painted works in acrylic.

In 1999 Bella was chosen by the City of St. Albert to create a 8’ x 32’ painted mural for the city’s Public Art Collection.

In 2013 Verne and Bella were chosen to complete a permanent public art installations consisting of 3 vitreous glass mosaic panels for the City of St. Albert Public Art Collection.
