The Big Splash explores time and movement in a bold explosion of form. It engages the viewer with a burst of direct energy that embodies the spirit of this station and of firefighting. Fabricated in metal, this installation uses the digital art language of the three-dimensional wire mesh, reflecting the current state of hi-tech drafting. The Big Splash surges visually along the pedestrian pathway, appearing suspended in space above the landscaped grounds of the Fire Station.

The reflective finish increases the artwork’s prominence day and night, allowing it to reflect sunshine, streetlights, and ambient light. The Big Splash will also reflect the flashing red of emergency vehicles, resounding with the alarm colour and raising awareness of happenings in the moment.

The team of Paul Slipper and Mary-Ann Liu consists of two internationally established public monument sculptors living in Vancouver BC. Our public sculptures command a broad appeal engaging viewers of all ages in creative exploration. We have not only created bronze and stone works that have become milestones in our own careers, but have also contributed significantly to the rich cultural fabric of Canadian Art.

We have dedicated our artistic careers with a humanistic approach in our work, expressed both in public commissions and our personal pursuits. We aim to achieve human warmth that is universal and immediate to all audiences. From playfulness and a sense of humour to grand passions and provocativeness, we employ genres ranging from classical realism to abstract expressionism in order to communicate the essence of the spirit of place.

Our experience in creating strong visual identities for public art sites is proven. We have completed over twenty very diverse public art projects. In Confederation Plaza, Ottawa ON, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier combing bronze and granite we successfully created an ambience of grand passion and heroic loss by the rendering of emotions into visual form. On Main Street, Cloverdale BC three granite eight feet tall figures are positioned to reflect the history and spirit of the community to both pedestrians and vehicle traffic. Local models were selected to reflect three professions. This highly successful installation has galvanized the residential and business community as a gathering place for public events.

We create site-specific installations that will pass the test of time conceptually and physically. Our work aims for universal appeal in easy to understand visual terms in order to connect with the general public.
