About
Spring North of Edmonton consists of three watercolour landscapes capturing the flat, prairie landscape. The paintings are created with carefully-laid horizontal washes, employing the technique of controlled “bleeds”. While it appears modest, the artist’s chosen format requires great care and control to create the suggestion of recession in the representation of relatively flat, featureless spaces. The three works depict an expression of the horizontal relationship between land and sky.
Savage’s watercolours focus on impression, light, and strength of colour, while the spontaneous nature of his chosen medium lends itself to his approach, where he aspires to react directly to the mood of the land. According to the artist, “the paintings are as much about the moving sky and the changes it brings as they are about the stable constant land.”
