Painted Aluminum|Painted Steel
Prince Charles Park

Marking the entrance to Prince Charles Park, stand the vibrant red, steel and aluminum entry gate by artists Lynn Malin and Elizabeth Beauchamp. The gate – a collaboration between the artists, the Prince Charles Community League, and the Edmonton Arts Council – draws inspiration from traditional entryways with its triangular apex. However, as with their other public art projects, the artist duo sought to add a quirky twist. The gate itself is an asymmetrical structure, and features the park’s name hung as a mobile, free to dance with the breeze. The script of the individual letters is a nod to the playful intent of the overall piece. Mounted on the left side of the entry gate is a red and yellow aluminum pinwheel. With solar powered LED lights affixed to the tips of the pinwheel, you can catch a frenzied circle of light on windy evenings. According to the artist, the goal of the artwork is to emphasize the idea of play and offer a sense of whimsy to the community.
