Passages of Time (A Survey of Edmonton History) provides a retrospective of Edmonton’s City Halls. The two collages blend a selection of historical photographs from the City of Edmonton’s Archives, along with renderings and models from the new City Hall. Some of the landmarks featured include the #1 Fire Hall from 1893 (the first permanent meeting place used as City Hall), and the Civic Block from 1912 (used as City Hall until City Hall was built in 1957). By scanning and layering the historic images, the artist has seamlessly combined a visual record of Edmonton’s past and present.

Judy Armstrong

Judy Armstrong is a freelance graphic designer and sessional instructor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Art and Design. She has been practicing for 15 years since her graduation from the University of Alberta with a Master’s in Visual Communication Design. Her work uses a research approach to design. Most recently, she has been involved in a film screening on location at Aldourie Castle in Scotland for a feature film Le Castle Papier, for which she designed and constructed six dresses out of real leaves for the film scene Leaf Dance in the Great Hall.
