Little Meadow

Among the dark, gestural brushstrokes, pops of yellow, pink, and royal blue add depth and life to this abstract landscape. The sweeping strokes of white paint sets the ominous looking sky apart from the textured marks that form the landscape. Unlike some of his earlier works, the colours in this painting are darker, reflecting a sophisticated analysis of the qualities of the evening, and of a darker experience of the land itself. The texture and colours weave non-representational colour theory and composition into the landscape so seamlessly that neither approach overpowers the other.

Continuing with his trademark, borrowed from both abstract painting and very old Dutch landscapes – a long, horizontal format – Bres layers his deep, rich colours. Little Meadow is influenced by post-impressionist and modernist paintings, and does not illustrate a particular location, but rather, contains a compilation of elements that evoke the parkland and foothills of Alberta.
