About
The First Night Festival mural provides an aerial perspective of the packed crowds in Churchill Square for the First Night Festival, Edmonton’s New Year’s Eve celebration. With a central vanishing point perspective, the eye is automatically drawn to the square, framed by boldly coloured Downtown buildings. The use of a gradient that becomes lighter near the center of the work illuminates the square, making it glow with a festive energy. The same image was used as the cover of the 1991 First Night Festival program also designed by Peter Field.
The mural was the first piece of wall art in Edmonton’s LRT system and the artwork was co-sponsored by Edmonton Transit and First Night Festival.
