Calder Community Mosaic fuses an ancient art form with 21st century techniques. The artwork is made from more than 7,500 triangular stained glass tiles. It measures 4.8m X 2.4m and sits in the Community Room at the Calder Library. The mosaic is visible from the library’s forecourt and welcomes all visitors in the universal languages of colour and geometric pattern.

Each mosaic element, from tile shape to colour choice, is carefully considered. The triangle represents strength, while the colours are inspired by Alberta’s landscape and seasons. The glittering mirror tiles interspersed throughout represent icy winter days and add a reflective element that allows viewers to see” themselves in the artwork.

The artists, Rebecca Bayer and David Gregory (SpaceMakePlace Design), ran a series of six workshops with members of the Calder community in June 2016 at the Africa Centre, Al Rashid Mosque, North West Edmonton Seniors Centre, Calder School, Edmonton Aboriginal Seniors Centre, and the old library branch. More than 200 people of all ages participated. The artists were able to collect 250 patterns, which they layered digitally and manipulated to create the final artwork.
