About
The portrait of Blair Brennan and his daughters captures something that viewers can immediately connect with. As an example of one of her many black and white portraits, Lazare focuses on mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, or other such combinations as part of a series about families. These pictures center more on capturing the connection between individuals than technical perfection. Ragged edges of backgrounds are left in for expressive purposes.
According to Lazare, “my subjects would come to my house, take their shoes off – this always amazed me – arrange themselves as they felt comfortable and we would talk while I photographed. I felt these were visits to my home as well as portrait sittings.” In an interview with Vue Weekly, she adds that “I know most of the people I photograph. It’s almost like I’m trying to make a family album.”
The photograph was taken with a Pentax 6 × 7 medium format camera with Ilford black and white film and printed on Ilford Multigrade FB (fibre based) paper.
