About
The photograph Back Alley captures a winter image of abandoned wooden pallets and a knocked over trash can. The photograph is part of a series documenting the back alleys of businesses along Edmonton’s Whyte Avenue, before the gentrification of the area. According to the artist, “the areas at the back of some businesses in less desirable neigbourhoods still intrigue me as they are often an accumulation of unwanted objects, make shift things and of course the mechanical operations of a building.”
The image is a hand coloured silver gelatin photograph – a processing technique introduced in 1871. The methodology and approach to the photo portray a contemporary vision of the city, while celebrating the roots of photography.
