Translations of Han

@ Gallery@501

Aug 20 - Oct 5 2024

Gallery@501 is excited to present two new exhibitions this fall, Translations of Han” by Toronto artist mihyun maria kim and Sacred Patterns” by a local Ojibway artist from the Pic River First Nation, Jessica Desmoulin. These two very diverse exhibits have a common theme – how interconnected life is.

In Translations of Han”, mihyun maria kim reflects on the notion of han”, an untranslatable Korean affect associated with historical unresolved grief. Visitors will witness generational impacts from experiences of war, displacement, poverty, loss of collective identity and family divide. A quiet interactive area will provide visitors with a space to reflect on feelings evoked by the work. mihyun maria kim’s exhibit includes inherited objects, installations, photographs, audio/video and mixed media pieces to activate her work through performance. She would like to acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Join the artists for a free public reception at Gallery@501 on Thursday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m. Both artists will be at the reception and will each give a short artists talk. In addition, mihyun maria kim will be doing a short engaging performance to activate her works.
