The John Sweenie Quartet Featuring Jean-Michel Pilc – Live Album Recording Show 2

@ Yardbird Suite // 8:00 pm

Ticketed Event

Edmonton-born, Montréal-based saxophonist and composer John Sweenie has gained national recognition for his unique musical voice and adventurous improvisational style.

He honors the traditional paths established by pioneers like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, while drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences, including Led Zeppelin and Arnold Schoenberg. Listeners can anticipate a compelling blend of singable melodies and contemporary classical serialism.

John’s journey into the world of jazz began in his teenage years, where his natural ear for music allowed him to quickly absorb and emulate the language of jazz. Before long, he was performing professionally across Alberta, sharing the stage with jazz legends like PJ Perry, Tommy Banks, Bob Mintzer, and Gil Goldstein. After earning his Bachelor of Music degree at MacEwan University in Edmonton, John made the bold move to Montréal in 2021 to pursue graduate studies at McGill University. It was there that he pushed the boundaries of his musical expression, diving into avant-garde compositional techniques — integrating serialism and algorithmic processes to craft innovative melodies and harmonies.

Since his arrival in Montréal, John has performed alongside some of the most celebrated figures in jazz, including Jean-Michel Pilc, Ira Coleman, Kevin Dean, Joe Sullivan, Jim Doxas, Melissa Aldana, and Bill Pierce, solidifying his reputation as a versatile and daring performer.

Currently, John is working toward a Doctor of Music degree, delving deep into the melodic genius of bebop pioneer Charlie Parker. His research aims to unlock new pedagogical strategies by dissecting the syntactical structure of Parker’s iconic melodic cells, seeking fresh ways to teach and understand the art of jazz improvisation.
