Join A Joyful Noise for their presentation of May I Have This Dance? on Saturday, May 25 at 4:00PM at St. Andrew’s United Church, 9915 148 Street NW
A Joyful Noise is winding up the choral year in a dancing mood. Yes, singers love to dance too! Or at least … sing about dancing. And since it is “the month of maying”, our dancing songs will celebrate the joys of spring, with music that is light hearted, upbeat, and sometimes perhaps a little naughty.
To paraphrase Tennyson, in springtime our thoughts turn to love. In our May concert, the Monday and Thursday choirs of A Joyful Noise will be exploring a wide range of dance music, such as lively Brazilian and Spanish folksongs that get the toes tapping and the sap rising. We will also sing more demure British dance pieces, and we suggest you listen carefully to see if they are as decorous as they first appear. When it comes to passion, Canadians are no slouches, as we will prove with the sultry Tango to Evora. And what about the “Log Driver’s Waltz”? Is it only about birling logs in the river?
The tone will be more elevated for the centrepiece of the concert when we will go to Vienna, and revel in Brahms’s or “love song waltzes”. These dance songs will give our choirs the chance to explore the many facets of love, with the mood ranging from flirtatious to sweet, amusing to poignant, harmonious to regretful. As an added bonus, Brahms wrote the work for four hands piano so the talents of our accompanists Kim Cousineau and Katie Tilbury will be on full display.
Come celebrate love and the joys of spring with us! Let your toes tap and your shoulders move, and see if you can stay in your seat for the whole concert!
