About
The Art Gallery of St. Albert’s newest staircase feature exhibition, Force Field, is comprised of one hundred motankas – fifty maidens, and fifty babas, created by Saskatchewan artist Bonnie Conly.
Motankas are an ancient Ukrainian tradition, a talisman created to protect the home. They are rooted in women’s strength — embodying their ability to hold family, community and culture to protect it for the future.
On February 24, 2022, when Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine, the drive to do something, anything, to help the people of Ukraine was felt globally. Conly wanted to pay tribute to the resolute women of Ukraine, who stayed to help in the war efforts. She envisions Force Field as a community of women – gathering in power, spirit and resolve.
By working with her hands, Conly reconnects to the culture and traditions of her ancestors. When creating motanka, each element is symbolic and the creator’s intentions matter. As each knot is tied, the maker makes a wish for an individual, family, community or country. Force Field holds thousands of Conly’s wishes for peace, connection and care.
Together these motanka pay tribute to the women of Ukraine, across time and space. Each one born of hope.
Force Field runs until April 26.
