About Anthem of Life, Part 1
The Gods create humans, but some insist it was not wise, and that the new creations must be destroyed! Others strive to empower mankind. Cosmic intrigues, battles, quests, trials and triumphs, among gods, animals, and other beings follow, as humanity struggles for a belonging on Earth.

This tale came down to South African Poet Laureate Mazisi Kunene from his Swazi Court Poet Ancestors, which he then shaped into an epic poem, Anthem of the Decades. Tololwa Mollel’s Anthem of Life trilogy brings that epic to the stage, to be performed by a rainbow ensemble in a production by Theatre Prospero. The production interweaves South, East and West African and South Asian music and dance, epic-scale mask and puppetry, and African-style storytelling, to create a confidently inclusive piece of new Canadian Classical Theatre.

About Theatre Prospero
For over the past 20 years, Theatre Prospero has celebrated the myths and stories at the roots of Edmonton’s many cultures through our various theatre productions. Our artists and audiences come together to share these stories that reflect our diverse society. The venues where they meet include theatres in Edmonton, our home venue on Alberta Avenue, found spaces, classrooms, seniors’ centres, and school gyms across Alberta and virtually across Canada.

What is a relaxed performance?
A relaxed theatre performance is an inclusive and accommodating theatrical experience designed to welcome individuals of all ages and abilities, including those with sensory sensitivities, disabilities, or neurodiverse conditions. In contrast to traditional theatre settings, which may have strict rules and expectations regarding audience behavior, a relaxed performance fosters a more flexible and understanding atmosphere.

The performance space is adapted to create a comfortable and non-intimidating environment. This may involve softer lighting, reduced noise levels, and relaxed rules regarding movement and noise from the audience.

Audience members are encouraged to participate in a way that suits their individual needs. This might include the option to move around, make noise, or leave and re-enter the performance space as necessary. Sensory triggers are minimized or modified to accommodate individuals who may be sensitive to them. Hearing protection will be provided for individuals with noise sensitivities.

Clear and concise communication will be provided to attendees prior to the performance, outlining what to expect and any accommodations available for the Relaxed Performance
