Arts Hab

Arts Habitat is an initiative of the Edmonton Arts Council with a mandate to provide safe, affordable and appropriate living and working space for artists.

Arts Habitat Association of Edmonton (ArtsHab) was formed in 1995 as an initiative through the Edmonton Arts Council to provide safe, affordable and appropriate living and working space for artists. In 1999 Arts Habitat opened Edmonton's first artist live/work space, ArtsHab 1, in downtown Edmonton.

ArtsHab has become the home and studio to some of Edmonton's most active contemporary visual artists, craft artists, musicians, filmmakers, dancers, writers, actors and others. The residents have nurtured a lively community that supports and assists each other as well as the broader Edmonton artistic community and the community of neighbours in the downtown core.

In 2008 the Edmonton Arts Council published a ten-year plan, called the Art of Living 2008 - 2018, for securing the future of the arts and heritage in the city of Edmonton. The first recommendation in the plan is to fund and reinvigorate the Arts Habitat Association of Edmonton (ArtsHab).

Through the 2009 City budget, ArtsHab has operating funds to hire staff that will find, develop and manage space for the arts in Edmonton. This will make it possible to develop unique and significant cultural spaces that will provide exciting opportunities to Edmonton artists as well as to the general public for generations to come.

SpaceFinder Alberta

ArtsHab – along with the Edmonton Chamber of Voluntary Organizations, Calgary Arts Development, with support from The Alberta Real Estate Foundation, ArtsBuild Ontario, and Fractured Atlas – is proud to support SpaceFinder Alberta.

SpaceFinder is a proven technology created and developed by Fractured Atlas, a US non-profit arts service organization. Our goal is to help organizations (community, volunteer, non-profit, etc.) and venues efficiently find suitable users for their under-used space through this free online matchmaking tool.

SpaceFinder Alberta will strengthen the creative, non-profit and small business sectors with an online marketplace for hourly, daily, weekly and longer-term rentals. From the user’s standpoint, SpaceFinder Alberta will streamline the search for appropriate and affordable space. From the venue’s point of view, it will bring more awareness to the community about your facilities and less space will go underused.
